CDS Solutions

CDS Solution

CDS offers the optimal solution for multiple problems in one, cost-effective, reliable, turnkey package. Biomass waste causes disposal issues, such as release of methane or other greenhouse gases, while burning wastes like rice straw affects air quality. If left unprocessed, the carbon and energy contained in these materials are lost.

Instead, with CDS systems, these wastes, or even fast-growing crops like bamboo or myscanthus, can be converted into valuable products to restore or improve soil health, putting carbon to work improving productivity on agricultural lands, thus increasing food security while helping local farmers.

CDS modular, appropriate-scale systems feature well-proven, "slow" pyrolysis technology and integrated components to process between 0.4 and up to 5 tons of biomass or other materials per system per hour. Outputs are biochar, process heat, and pyrolysis oil, or other coproducts. Pyrolysis oil can be used to run a generator that produces electricty in remote areas.

Systems can be configured to convert designated biomass, crop wastes, sawdust, tires, plastic, manure or Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) into varying proportions of biochar, electricity, process heat, and oil with quick and simple automated adjustments. See below. This technology is meant for continuous processing, with the standard system configuration yielding 3,600 to 4,700 tons of biochar per module per year – enough to fill more than a 20-ft container daily.

What problems does CDS solve?

CDS systems help resolve the growing and complex problems of accumulating atmospheric carbon, with a corresponding deficiency of carbon in the soil, especially depleted, tropical or subtropical soils, combined with waste biomass and other raw materials widely available in certain regions, lack of food and energy (food and energy security) in many developing economies.

Part of the solution: an innovative, "slow pyrolysis" core technology, built into a semi-mobile, integrated, turnkey package. These systems are available now and proven in many applications with diverse feedstocks. See more about CDS strategic partner, or background on how it works.

CDS Core System

To put this in context, this amount of biochar sequesters 11,000 tons of CO2 each year while enlivening 3.5 square miles of cropland and replacing 8,000 tons of emissions from fossil fuels with green electricity.  The estimated cash value of the combined co-products is roughly $3 million per system per year, making for a healthy investment payback in as little as 2-3 years. CDS systems are semi-mobile and containerized consisting of a pyrolysis module integrated with the necessary components to ensure continuous, turnkey operation.

This technology is fully mature and ready for immediate application.

Operating Efficiency of CDS Containerized, Integrated Solution

One of the advantages of this technology is its relatively compact size and semi-portability:  a complete system can be packaged in two 40-foot containers, delivered to a remote area with limited or no infrastructure, quickly set up and operated with minimum training.  Once operational, a full-sized unit produces its own power plus an additional 700KW for local or grid consumption, or the syn gas can be condensed into bio-oil for transport.  Systems can be relocated, if that becomes necessary, protecting the owner’s asset value.
